It is a nation unique unto itself. None have willingly given more of their own resources in the aid of global neighbors than the people of the United States. The Americans have shared their fruits of toil with the poorest of countries; the warriors among them have traveled afar to bring freedom to the oppressed; and countless volunteers have assisted others worldwide in times of disaster.
America’s story is one of ordinary people accomplishing extraordinary things. To understand what has made the United States of America so unique, one must examine the nation’s most profound events — whether glorious or tragic — as well as the various people involved — whether noble or otherwise. With the encapsulation of history into a condensed body of work, it is inevitable that some events and contributions will be minimized or overlooked. Nevertheless, it is essential, especially in these times, to reflect upon the lessons that history teaches about this remarkable country and its people. This is the story of America — the testimony of a nation.
The books listed below provide a concise history of the United States from 1492 to the present.
